Snowpack remains average in  Southern Alberta and South Eastern British Columbia however a cold spring is slowing down  the runoff  or melt . If you are planning a trip to the Elk River or Bow River look at coming up after July 1st . If you are on need of a Trout fix prior to that consider the Missouri River in Montana .

Friends,

Spring is in The air here in S.E. Arizona  it’s deceiving as I think I should be out Fishing ,but that is a month away .The Same holds tru for the Northern Rockies , weather there is hovering around freezing so not much is going on ..until May .In the meantime it’s time to start planning some early season fishing trips. One I am looking forward to is Montana’s  Missouri River  , for  a couple of reasons ,while all other rivers blow out form snow melt or run -off ,The Missouri River runs clear . Although it can be high it still fishes great . This will  be my second season on The Mo. and I am elated to be working with two of the best Independent Outfitters on The River . As it stands now I will be there from May 15 to the end of June ,Caddis and P.M.D. Time !

With the Season Just around the corner , things (so far) are looking decent in the snow pack department with most drainages sitting at 100%  . What this means is that the early season will be great and normal flows through out the rest of the season.Rivers in the East Kootenays re. the Elk & Saint Mary River’s will be go to go by the time the season re-opens which is June 15. We had to wait a while for  the early season dry fly fishing on the Bow last season ,this year it should start to happen by the end of June .One can also expect great conditions on The Crowsnest and Oldman Rivers .Further to the west the normal  snowpack will mean that the Upper Columbia and Slocan Rivers will also be in great shape !.We are looking forward to hatches of Golden Stones and Green Drakes !

Friends,

Our season officially kicks off on the 15th of June when the season re-opens however due to high water we are not going to get to going until the 1st of July when the river should be fishable so we are playing it safe. The nice thing about high water is (once it comes down) as the river’s will be a much needed purge as flows drop side channels and soft spots will be the top producers and we will have great flows well into the late season. Hatchwise everything is going to be late for example the Caddis hatch n the Bow which should have started last week is now just getting started, the cooler temps will effect the other insects re. Golden Stones and Green Drakes. Longterm forecasts are predicting weather patterns to warm up by July so we should be “in” for a decent hopper year.

The Kootenay Flyshop

DBO will be operating out of Fernie’s original Flyshop this year. The Kootenay Flyshop flyshop boats the best selection of Flies for the area, great products from Sage, Simms, Rio and Hatch plus excellent advise on our area waters. The Shop is located on the strip in Fernie and is within easy walking distance of great eateries and other amenities.
