As much as I love to float rivers and catch large trout there is something to be said for getting back to the basics ,dropping the trailer and heading out to fish small streams. This is exactly what I did yesterday, grabbing my favorite 4 wt.,leaving my “techy” fly-boxes behind and walking as opposed to to rowing.I had the creek to myself ,the cutties where eager to eat as they usually are ..refreshing from the selectivity of the tailwater trout I have been harassing (or vice versa) for the last month and a bit.The fly of choice was a Neversink foam caddis, despite the Green Drakes that where hatching they ate the shit out of it ,perhaps because it looked like an emerging drake ,or a stonefly ,it did not matter and there was no need for a “why are they eating it” session. The cutthroats ranged from 5-10 inches and where as gorgeous as Westslope Cutthroats can get.The day was “total zen” just me, a 4 wt and a couple of fly-boxes .. very refreshing.I can’t wait to go do it again.
