Missouri River Brown Trout
One of the most effective ways to catch Trout is to fish Streamers. However it does require Angler’s to stay focused and “live it” as the Streamer bite will and usually turn on and off during the course of the day. The rewards are there for those that persist as eventually your fly will either “piss off ” or hit jack pot with a fish that wants to eat. Streamer fishing is often overlooked by both Guides and Clients alike, Why ? It demands the Guide to teach a Client how to cast and retrieve large flies , on the Client end it there is usually no instant gratification resulting in drought periods between fish. The rewards are there, as I can attest to the fact that over the last several years of Guiding the biggest fish that have ended up in my net are usually caught when Clients fish Streamers. From small rivers and streams to big floatable rivers like Alberta’s Bow River and Montana’s Missouri River Streamers have there place ,especially when “things” don’t seen to be happening and you need to make them happen. A well placed Streamer into a Trout’s liar can result in an aggressive and angry eat and save the day. Most Streamer addicts have their assortment of “go to” Streamers. The science of their selection is based on what they are confident in fishing which of course is based on previous results. I usually base my choices on dark day -dark fly and bright day -bright fly theory then switch up as I go. Fly Size can also be important and again switching up between big articulated Flies and Smaller single hook flies I think is important. For larger rivers a 9 foot 7 weight rod armed with a 10-25 Sink Tip works for me , on smaller rivers a 9ft 5 or 6 weight is a good choice as you can bounce between casting streamers ,large attractor Dries and also enables set up for rising fish with ease. Below are some pics with Trout that ate streamers, the evidence is in their mouths. Enjoy !
