The Sonoran Dessert is a wonderful backdrop for watching Bird Dogs do what they are bred to do…..point birds. The environment is harsh. The often rocky ground can rip up and unconditioned Dog’s pads in a heartbeat.Cactus plants and other thorny things can also slow them down and of course the scenting conditions can also be less than ideal.

Bird Dogs that are hunted in the desert learn to adapt, dodging the cactus as they run slowing down when they get a whiff of something ,they learn to be cautious at all times.

The dogs become masters of dealing with running Gambels and Scaled Quail, often relocating and hooking back in hopes of pinning the running birds. When it comes to Mearns Quail the dogs learn to loop around and sample the different cover that the birds can be found in.Hitting the canyon floor then moving up on to the sides, working underneath the Oaks. It’s impressive to watch a dog figure out the Desert Bird game and slam on point.
